How to depuff your face in the morning: 7 tricks that work
You wake up with heavy eyelids and a rounder face than yesterday. Here's why it happens and seven simple steps to depuff in a few minutes, with cold, massage and a couple of evening habits.
Why is your face puffy in the morning?
While you sleep, you spend hours lying flat and barely moving. Fluid that is normally spread around by movement and gravity tends to collect where the skin is thinnest, especially the eyelids and cheeks. That's why puffiness peaks when you wake up and goes down on its own through the morning.
Some things make it worse:
- Salty or heavily processed dinners: salt makes your body hold on to more water.
- Alcohol the night before.
- Too little or poor sleep, and sleeping on your front.
- Crying before bed or seasonal allergies.
- Hormonal changes during your cycle.
The good news: it's almost always temporary, and a few simple steps speed things up a lot.
7 tricks to depuff your face in minutes
1. Cold water on your face
The simplest step. Wash your face with cold water or hold a cloth soaked in very cold water on it for a minute. Cold tightens the surface blood vessels and your skin instantly looks firmer.
2. An ice roller
The easy, effective version of an ice cube, without drips or stinging. Glide the ice roller from the centre of your face towards your ears, and from your chin down your neck. One or two minutes is enough.
3. Cold steel globes or gua sha
Keep them in the fridge (not the freezer) and use them straight away. Steel stays cold longer than stone and fits the eye contour beautifully. Make slow strokes from the inner corner of the eye towards the temple.
4. A 3-minute lymphatic massage
With your serum or moisturiser, so your fingers glide without pulling:
- Press gently 5 times with your fingertips just above your collarbone: this is where fluid "drains".
- Slide your fingers from below your ears down your neck.
- From the centre of your forehead out to your temples.
- From the sides of your nose, across your cheekbones, towards your ears.
- Under the eyes, with your ring finger and no pressure, from the inner corner outwards.
5. Chilled eye cream
Keep your eye cream in the fridge. Applied cold with a gentle massage, it helps your eyes look rested in seconds. Paired with an eye massager, the product spreads better without tugging the skin.
6. Move and drink water
A glass of water when you wake up and five minutes of movement (stretching, walking around, showering) get your circulation going and help the puffiness go down sooner.
7. Caffeine… on the outside
Masks or eye creams with caffeine are a make-up classic: they make the eye area look smoother for a few hours. A good extra, not a replacement for cold and massage.
What to do the night before
| Habit | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Sleep with your head slightly raised | Less fluid collects in your face. |
| Sleep on your back | No pillow pressure on your cheeks and eyelids. |
| Eat a light, low-salt dinner | You retain less water overnight. |
| Limit alcohol | One of the biggest causes of next-day puffiness. |
| Always remove your make-up | Leftover eye make-up can irritate and redden the eyes. |
| Sleep 7-8 hours | Lack of sleep shows in your eyes first. |
Mistakes to avoid
- Putting ice straight on your skin for a long time: it can irritate it. Always use a roller or wrap the ice in a cloth.
- Rubbing or stretching the skin around your eyes: it's the thinnest on your face.
- Using tools straight from the freezer on sensitive skin: use the fridge instead, or let them warm up for 30 seconds.
- Massaging on dry skin: always use a serum or cream so your fingers or tool glide.
When should you see a doctor?
Morning puffiness that goes away on its own within a few hours is normal. See your doctor if the swelling lasts all day, appears on only one side, comes with itching, pain or redness, or if your ankles or hands swell too.
Frequently asked questions
How long does morning facial puffiness take to go down?
Left alone, usually one to two hours. With cold water, an ice roller and a gentle 3-5 minute massage you'll see a difference much sooner, almost instantly.
Is an ice roller or a gua sha better?
An ice roller is quicker and easier for cold; a gua sha allows a more precise massage of the cheekbones, jaw and neck. Ideally combine both – there are 2-in-1 tools that do both.
Can I use an ice roller every day?
Yes. One or two minutes in the morning is enough. If your skin is very sensitive or prone to redness, use it for less time and never straight from the freezer.
Why do my eyes get puffier than the rest of my face?
Because eyelid skin is the thinnest on your face, so fluid collects there more easily while you're lying down.
Does sleeping on two pillows really help?
Raising your head a little means less fluid collects in your face overnight. You don't need much: a slightly higher pillow is usually enough.
